Summary
In Europe, the raging young people’s « contestation » campaign against the establishment, which culminated its apex in 1968, also produced ideological and conceptual avant-garde movement in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century also in the architecture and urbanism. This situation was summarized by architect Isozaki Arata who had been in close contact with Western architects who had carried on avant-garde at the time, under the title « Destruction of Architecture – The 1968 Architectural Scene » (1975). By this book which clearly analyzed the architect ‘s theories at the time, the radicalism in Western World had a great influence even on the young Japanese architectural students. Presented in somewhat journalistic way by a Japanese protagonist engaged in this movement had been already overcome with the post-modernism and the post-radicalism called by Taro Igarashi. But nowadays, with an appropriate historical distance, the radicalism has become a scientific object of the historical study integrated into the academic field of architectural history and art history in the Western Countries. Professor Daniela Prina is an architectural historian who is active in such new movements of the architectural history. Through this lecture, the movement of the architect once captured as « destruction of Architecture » in Japan would be re-examined with attention to the elements such as sociological aspect that has been overlooked, and as the ecological aspect that would be suggestive to our vision of the future.
