The Fixperts project was co-founded in 2012 by Professor Daniel Charny from Kingston University in the UK. This growing world-wide network of designers and makers aims to provide real world design solutions to improve the daily lives of people in need of a little design help. Third year design students from KIT and KYOTO Design Lab have worked annually on a Fixperts project since 2015 as part of their design curriculum. Following a thematic brief, which this year was ‘People who work outside,” they are asked to find design partners in Kyoto and through discussion, ethnographic research and iterative prototyping, are asked to design products that will improve their working situation. They are also asked to make a four-minute bi-lingual video that describes the design and production process and the evolution of their ideas.

In 2017, D-lab’s five teams of participating students worked for two months in collaboration with their Fix Partners – a goldfish seller, an itinerant shoe repairer, a florist, a farmer and food vendor. The team working with Nobuaki Ohno, a 70 year-old farmer was composed of Milena Kaneko, Sotaro Tanaka, Takuji Yoshida and Cheryl Ho. Their ‘Farming Tool for Ohno’ was selected as the runner-up for the RCA Helen Hamlyn Fixperts Award 2017. Together they created a device that would enable him to safely hammer the many poles he uses into the ground. His previous technique was highly dangerous.

The RCA Helen Hamlyn Fixperts Award is an annual award given by the Helen Hamlyn Center for Design at the Royal College of Art which undertakes design research and projects with industry that will contribute to improving people’s lives. This award selects an inspiring fix, which has created direct and real benefit.
