「Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2017」

Outdoor Retailer Summer Market is committed to delivering the widest and most comprehensive outdoor buyer demographic that has open-to-buy and a passion for the outdoors. Summer Market is the largest international outdoor sports show of its kind, and caters to a specialty audience.

The “S++” project was a collaboration between John McNair of the D-lab Design Associate, Professor Sachiko Sukigara of the Department of Advanced Fibro Science, Dr. Kazunari Masutani of the Department of Bio-Based Materials at the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT), Ichiro Izawa and his team at the Kyoto Prefectural Institute for Northern Industry and Mayumi Shirai at the DuPont Industrial BioScience. It was initiated and supervised by Professor Julia Cassim, KYOTO Design Lab.
The project investigated whether it was possible to re-engineer Tango chirimen by taking advantage of its inherent intelligence of structure and processing alongside the thermal advantages of silk but combining it with sustainable bio-plastic filament. The re-engineered version could then better meet the extreme functional requirements of the burgeoning healthcare market in rapidly ageing Japan. This would then allow new scenarios of use and product applications to be found for it beyond its traditional use as kimono fabric – a market that is in severe decline.
