2017年、京都工芸繊維大学 KYOTO Design Labのデザイナー・イン・レジデンスとして滞在制作をおこなったアサ・アシュア氏によって制作されたSTEMチェアの原寸大プロトタイプが、ロンドンのアラン・ギャラリーにて展示されています。アラン・ギャラリーは、ロンドンの中心部・コベントガーデンにある独自企画をおこなう主要なスペースで、現代デザイン理解の促進を目指しています。
アシュア氏は、竹とセルロース・ナノファイバーの専門家である京都工芸繊維大学バイオベースマテリアル学専攻バイオ機能材料分野の岡久陽子助教、3Dスキャニングの専門家である京都工芸繊維大学高分子機能工学課程の西川幸宏准教授との協働により、制作をおこないました。
制作の目的は、竹の内部構造を生産性の高い3D構造に変換することにありました。30倍に拡大し、竹の自然の幾何学的成長パターンや、多孔質構造などの構造的特性を研究しました。アシュア氏はこのデータをSTEMチェアの構造として用いることで、この構造や素材がプロダクトに最適化可能であることを示しました。このプロジェクトは、KYOTO Design Labのジュリア・カセム特任教授の監修によって着手されました。
アシュア氏のSTEMチェアが展示されている展覧会「Prototypes and Experiments 9」は、2008年からアラン・ギャラリーにて継続的に開催されているシリーズ展です。出展作家には、さまざまなアイデアが発展する創造的なプロセスを理解させることが求められ、図面やスケッチなどを通して制作のプロセスやデザインの成果物が提示されます。

A full-size prototype of the STEM chair developed during Assa Ashuach’s 2017 design residency at KYOTO Design Lab at the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) is currently on show in London at the Aram Gallery – the leading independently-curated space in Covent Garden that encourages and promotes understanding of contemporary design.
Assa worked with materials scientist Professor Yoko Okahisa, a specialist in bamboo and cellulose nano-fibres from KIT’s Department of Bio-Based Materials and 3D scanning specialist Professor Yukihiro Nishikawa from the Department of MacroMolecular Science and Engineering.
The aim was to translate bamboo’s internal structure into producible 3D structures. Scaled-up by 3000 percent, the natural geometrical growth patterns of the bamboo were studied in terms of structural porosity and its geometrical growth intelligence. Assa then used this data to create the STEM chair to demonstrate how structures and the use of materials in products can be optimised. The project was initiated and is supervised by Professor Julia Cassim of KYOTO Design Lab.
