松ヶ崎キャンパスの中庭に新たに整備されたガーデンを“生きた記録可能なシステム”へと変換していく実践型コース「Campus Garden – Archive, Maintain, Connect」を開講します。
庭は決して静的な存在ではなく、成長し、衰え、季節とともに変化しながら、それに関わった人々の痕跡を蓄積していきます。それらを保存し共有するためには、単なる観察を超え、ツール、構造、そしてケアの文化が求められます。
本コースでは、3つのモジュールを通じて、デジタルとフィジカルを横断する庭を長期的に記録・維持・共有するための方法、習慣、インターフェースを構築します。作業は「記憶と記録の問い」から始まり、「継続的なケアと責任」へと移行し、最終的にアーカイブを外部へと開き、他者にとってアクセス可能で可視的なものへと展開します。
– 庭において、何を記憶すべきか？
3Dスキャン、空間マッピング、環境センシングを用いて庭を記録し、成長・衰退・人為的な介入の変化を、時間の経過とともに追跡するための方法を構築する。
Module B：メンテナンス
– デジタルとフィジカルが連動する庭をケアするとは何か？
焦点は記録から、継続的な管理と責任へと移行する。庭師の協力のもと、日常・季節・キュレーションの各レベルにおける行為を定義し、役割分担を明確にしたメンテナンスマニュアルを作成する。
Module C：インターフェース
– 生きたアーカイブをどのようにナビゲートし、働きかけることができるか？
収集されたデータを意味のある形で可視化する空間データビューアを統合し、一般公開用のウェブインターフェースおよびガーデンガイドを設計・構築する。
スケジュール
期間：2026年5月中旬〜7月末（全12週間）
週1回（主に月曜日）ミーティングを実施し、各モジュールは最大4週間、コース全体で計12週間となります。

KYOTO Design Lab will offer the practice-based course “Campus Garden – Archive, Maintain, Connect.” This course transforms the newly built garden in the courtyard of the Matsugasaki Campus into a living, traceable system.
A garden is never static — it grows, decays, and changes with the seasons, carrying the traces of everyone who has tended it. Preserving and sharing that life requires more than observation; it demands tools, structures, and a culture of care.
Across three modules, the course builds exactly that: the methods, habits, and interfaces needed to document, maintain, and share a digital-physical garden over time. Work begins with questions of memory and capture, shifts to ongoing care and responsibility, and concludes by turning the archive outward — making it navigable and visible to others.
– What is worth remembering in a garden?
The garden is captured through 3D scanning, spatial mapping, and environmental sensing, with strategies developed to track growth, decay, and intervention over time.
Module B: Maintenance
– What does it mean to take care of a digital-physical garden?
The focus shifts from documentation to ongoing responsibility, producing a maintenance manual with the help of a gardener that defines daily, seasonal, and curatorial actions with clearly assigned roles.
Module C: Interface
– How do you navigate and act within a living archive?
A public-facing web interface and garden guide are designed and built, integrating a spatial data viewer that connects collected data to meaningful visualisation.
Schedule
Course Period: Mid-May to late July 2026 (12 weeks)
Weekly meetings (generally be held on Mondays) each module will take up to 4 weeks, totaling in 12 weeks for whole course.

*This project is open to Master’s students at Kyoto Institute of Technology, including international students.
*Students from outside the architecture program are also welcome.

Enrollment is planned under one of the following courses (2 credits each, 4 credits in total).
- International Project of Architectural Design I & II
- or
- Regional Project of Architectural Design I & II
Requirement
- The project will be conducted in English.
- Prior knowledge about the used tools is welcome, but not required.
