「The Art of Editing」

The Senses in Architecture

KYOTO Design Lab will host a collaborative workshop with Lars Müller, a world-renowned editor, designer, and publisher.

Students wishing to participate should apply via the application form below by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. If there are too many applications, participants will be selected after screening.

*This workshop gives credits for “International Design Project IV”.

“The Art of Editing”
is the title of the workshop, which deals with aspects and processes that involve collecting, sorting, selecting and structuring content (visual and verbal) to be reliably and efficiently communicated to an intended audience. The result is a document that both reflects the subjective attitude of the author and users objective insights into the presented topic. The document also demands quality in innovation and design.

The guiding principle is editing on behalf of the reader/recipient, which accompanies the author in his/her creation of content without hindering his/her freedom of expression.

The workshop teaches methods and strategies for the phases and processes of editing and provides suggestions for the creative realization in an analogue or digital medium.

I firmly believe that designers and architects owe it to themselves and to the users of their products to have a wealth of knowledge and experience that elevates them above the level of their audience and enables them to empathize with the users and anticipate how the users of their houses and their objects can benefit from them and how to enrich their everyday lives. Furthermore, they must be clear about the consequences of their engagement. Its duration, effects on society, culture and the environment. The necessary advantage can only be achieved through a consistent, critical and attentive way of life. Curiosity and endurance are the drivers.

“The Senses in Architecture”
is the topic of the workshop. It opens the field for the individual examination of an aspect in architecture and design that is often lost and neglected in the planning and design of buildings: the sensual experiences that people have in their working and living environments, but also in public spaces, that they enjoy or are exposed to. In the workshop, participants gather their own insights, document and name them, and place them in a context which they determine as authors and summarize in a personal statement. The result is a media product in the form of an analogue or digital medium: fanzine, booklet, brochure, poster, website, app, etc.

As inspiration for the individual investigations, the workshop looks at the phenomena of sensory perception and how sensations manifest themselves in architecture. This includes insights into the history of society and architecture and into literature. To give the workshop a focus on the future, our discourse is embedded in a current question:

“Modernism – Preserve or Overcome”
is a question that arises in all design disciplines. Modernism of the 20th century has brought about far-reaching changes and significantly increased the living standards of a large part of the world’s population. However, progress has also come at a price and caused losses that our workshop aims to identify and question.

Which modern premises are valid for a post-modern (digital) society, and which are obsolete or hindering development? In the best case, the workshop will provide us with insights that extend beyond our professional discipline and can influence our individual lives. For us as architects and designers, the workshop should provide guidance on how we can responsibly incorporate sensual aspects into our considerations and our work to create an environment that is fair to people and worthy of their fantastic sensual sensorium, alongside all technological innovations.
