KYOTO Design Labでは、ソーシャルイノベーションとサステナビリティのためのデザイン研究を牽引してきた、イタリアのデザイン研究者 エツィオ・マンズィーニ氏を迎え、アカデミックな視点からトークとディスカッションを行います。
マンズィーニ氏は、DESIS Networkの創設者であり、『Design, When Everybody Designs: An Introduction to Design for Social Innovation』や『Politics of the Everyday: Designing in Dark Times』などの著作で知られる、デザイン・社会・サステイナビリティをめぐる国際的な研究者です。とりわけ、社会変革における市民の創造性や協働の可能性に着目し、「誰もがデザインする時代」におけるデザインの役割を問い続けてきました。このたび、日本語版『誰もがデザインする時代のデザイン』（BNN、2026年）の刊行を契機に、マンズィーニ氏を京都に迎えてセッションを行います。
セッションでは、「Social Innovation in the Era of Dis/connections」をテーマに、社会的・政治的・技術的な分断が進む一方で、新たなつながりや協働の形が生まれつつある現代社会を見据えながら、これからのソーシャルイノベーションの可能性について議論します。
コミュニティ、テクノロジー、地域性、民主主義、そしてデザイン実践は、分断と接続が交錯する時代においてどのような役割を果たしうるのか。本セッションでは、マンズィーニ氏の長年にわたる研究と実践を手がかりに、よりサステナブルで包摂的な未来を構想するための視点を共有し、参加者とともに対話を深めます。

エツィオ・マンズィーニ Ezio Manzini
30年以上にわたり、サステイナビリティのためのデザイン領域で研究・実践を続ける。近年は、公正で エコロジカルな移行に向けたソーシャルイノベーションに注力している。こうした問題意識の もと、15年前にDESIS ネットワーク（https://www.desisnetwork.org）を設立。DESIS は、デザイン スクールによる国際ネットワークとして、サステイナビリティのためのソーシャルイノベーションに関わるデザイン活動を展開している。2024年にはデザイン研究に関する国際学会Design Research Society より生涯業績賞を受賞。現在、 DESIS ネットワークのプレジデントであり、ミラノ工科大学の名誉教授を務める。これまで世界 各地のデザインスクールで客員教授としても活動してきた。本書のほか、主な近著に『Politics of the Everyday』 （Bloomsbury、2019年／邦題『日々の政治 ソーシャ ルイノベーションをもたらすデザイン文化』BNN、2020年） 、『Livable Proximity』 （Egea、2021年／邦題『ここち よい近さがまちを変える―ケアとデジタルによる近接のデザイン』X デザイン出版、2023年）、ミケーレ・ ダレーナとの共著『Fare Assieme, Una nuova generazione di servizi pubblici collaborativi （ともにつくる： 協働型公共サービスの新世代）』 （Egea、2024年／日本語未訳）がある。

KYOTO Design Lab will host an academic talk and discussion with Ezio Manzini, an Italian design researcher who has been a leading figure in design for social innovation and sustainability.
Manzini is the founder of the DESIS Network and an internationally recognized researcher working at the intersection of design, society, and sustainability. He is known for publications including Design, When Everybody Designs: An Introduction to Design for Social Innovation and Politics of the Everyday: Designing in Dark Times. His work has focused particularly on the creativity of citizens and the potential of collaboration to bring about social transformation, while continuing to examine the role of design in an age when “everybody designs.” To mark the publication of the Japanese edition of Design, When Everybody Designs (BNN, 2026), KYOTO Design Lab welcomes Manzini to Kyoto for this special session.
Under the theme “Social Innovation in the Era of Dis/connections,” the session will explore the possibilities for social innovation in contemporary society, where social, political, and technological divisions are deepening even as new forms of connection and collaboration continue to emerge.
What roles can communities, technology, locality, democracy, and design practice play in an era marked by both disconnection and connection? Drawing on Manzini’s many years of research and practice, the session will share perspectives on envisioning more sustainable and inclusive futures and foster dialogue with participants.

Ezio Manzini
For more than 30 years, Ezio Manzini has conducted research and practice in the field of design for sustainability. In recent years, his work has focused on social innovation directed towards just and ecological transitions. With these concerns in mind, he founded the DESIS Network (https://www.desisnetwork.org) 15 years ago. DESIS is an international network of design schools engaged in design activities related to social innovation for sustainability. In 2024, Manzini received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Design Research Society in recognition of his contributions to design research. He currently serves as President of the DESIS Network and Professor Emeritus at Politecnico di Milano. He has also taught as a visiting professor at design schools around the world. In addition to Design, When Everybody Designs, his recent publications include Politics of the Everyday (Bloomsbury, 2019; Japanese edition published by BNN in 2020), Livable Proximity (Egea, 2021; Japanese edition published by X Design Publishing in 2023), and Fare Assieme: Una nuova generazione di servizi pubblici collaborativi (Doing Things Together: A New Generation of Collaborative Public Services), co-authored with Michele D’Alena (Egea, 2024; not yet translated into Japanese).
