Virtual and Immersive KYOTO

Period: 5 February – 21 May, 2020
Venue: KYOTO Design Lab, Kyoto Institute of Technology

Detail
KYOTO Design Lab will hold a workshop where teams consist of American students and Japanese students generate 3D models from the recordings of Kyoto’s architecture and urban environment and turn them into immersive, interactive contents such as those of AR and VR.
This workshop aims to reconstruct the relationship between architecture and its representation methods. Since it is hard to separate architecture from its physical volume and the site they sit on, works of architecture are not meant to be exhibited in museums. Architectural design is so closely related to the history and context of the site that reconstruction would take away a part of its essence.
While architectural model, photography, and drawing are great representation methods, they take architecture as a whole and divide it into separate chunks of meanings, which often makes it hard for the general public to understand it thoroughly. There has always been a certain divergence between architecture and its representations.
In this project, we aim to minimize this divergence and authentically express the meanings and values of architecture. This also means to take back the original relationship between architecture and various media.
In the workshop, students of architecture, urban planning, design, and computer science will begin by utilizing design tools and creating interactive contents in the end. Most of the MIT students who will be taking part have no prior experience in using design tools. Prior knowledge is not needed for this workshop as long as you are willing to learn.

Schedule
This workshop is held as a joint studio with MIT and divided into the following 3 stages:

Stage 1 (5 Feb. – 18 Mar.)
We will take part in Prof. Nagakura’s lecture through Skype and learn about emerging representation methods that utilize latest technology and basic technical aspects of these methods. Participation in the kick-off meeting is mandatory.

Stage 2 (21 Mar. – 29 Mar.)
MIT students will come to Kyoto and conduct field works with KIT students.
Participation during this entire period is mandatory.
In the first half of this stage, students select object of research.
In the latter half, each team collect necessary data.

Stage 3 (1 Apr. – 21 May.)
Students will take the collected data and attempt to express the value of architecture using various representation methods. The results will be presented during the final review on May 21st. Participation in mid review and final review is mandatory.

During the stage 1, we will hold a Skype kick-off meeting with MIT students. After this, latest examples of computational design are introduced and basic technical tutorials are held in each country. The technical tutorial will teach photogrammetry method, shooting and editing of panorama video, and installment and basic operation of Unity.

During the stage 2, both MIT and KIT students conduct a fieldwork with Kyoto city after finalizing the theme of the interactive content. Doing the fieldworks, students make various recordings such as photography and video to collect the materials for 3D model and the content.

During the stage 3, students begin creating an interactive content either individually or with a group. Mid review and final review are held simultaneously in the U.S. and Japan.

-Modeling using photogrammetry software
-Recording with a drone
-Filming a panorama video
-Manipulation of interactive contents using game engine
-AR/VR

Workshop leader
Associate Professor Takehiko Nagakura [Director, Computation Group, MIT]

Takehiko Nagakura is an architect from Tokyo. At MIT, he teaches courses related computer-aided design, and his research focuses on the representation and computation of architectural space and formal design knowledge. He has founded and led Architecture, Representation and Computation group (ARC) since 1996. His built projects include Gushikawa Orchid Center (SD Review Award 1998 and Nikkei New Office Award 1999). His a key advisory member for Arcbazar.com, an online competition platform created to democratize architectural design process through crowdsourcing.
At MIT, Nagakura’s academic research focuses on the computational representation of architectural space and formal design knowledge. Inspired by the perspective apparatus Albrecht Durer documented in 1525, Nagakura invented a series of patented interactive visualization device, Digitarama, Deskrama and their augmented reality cousin, Multirama AR. His recent research on digital heritage uses photogrammetric modeling, panoramic videos, game engine, and drones to capture important architectural heritage such as the villas of Andrea Palladio and represent them in a novel interactive format. He heads the project UNBUILT, with research scientist Kent Larson, in which his team has developed computer graphics walk-through visualization of significant early modern unbuilt projects, including Le Corbusier’s Palace of Soviet, Giuseppe Terragni’s Danteum, and Tatlin’s Tower for the Third International. Its outcome has been exhibited in At the End of Century Exhibition in Tokyo Contemporary Art Museum in 1998, Museum of Contemporary Art at Los Angeles in 2000, and other architectural exhibitions in the world.
Before coming to MIT in 1993, Nagakura worked for Fumihiko Maki in Tokyo, and was an instructor at Harvard University, Graduate School of Design. He earned Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture from Tokyo University in 1985, Master of Architecture from Harvard University in 1987, and Master of Engineering in Architecture from Tokyo University in 1988. He completed his PhD at Harvard in 1996, with a dissertation that proposed a computable paradigm for developing designs through recognition of architectural forms and transformations in drawings, and its software implementation is under way.
