ルツェルン応用科学芸術大学(HSLU)とのジョイントスタジオ「水と文化」。5年間全10期を計画しており、その第5期です。このジョイントスタジオ全体を通して考えたいのは、「建築とは何か？」ということです。そして、その答えを見出すためのきっかけとして、自然と建築との関係、中でも水と建築との関係を考えていきます。
水と建築との関係を探るために、ここでは、背景の異なるふたつの湖、ルツェルン湖と琵琶湖を選び、期毎にテーマを掲げそのテーマについてリサーチし、そのリサーチをもとにデザインをしていきます。期毎に見いだされたデザインが5年分積み重なった先に、「建築とは何か？」という問いに対する答えが見つかるはずです。
今期は、第4期に続き「建築にとっての美とは何か？」に着目し「水と美」というテーマに取り組みます。対象は、琵琶湖。江戸時代、歌川広重によって描かれた「近江八景」を出発点とし、過去と現在をリサーチし、未来に向けてデザインします。過去に何が描かれ、現在に何が残っていて、そして、未来に何が残せるのか？
参加者は、「近江八景」を含む8つのストリップ状の敷地毎に分かれて、HSLUの学生たちとチームを組み、オンラインによる調査、そしてその調査を基にした設計を行います。
現在を捉えたうえで、ありうべき未来のランドスケープを描く事を目標とします。

The 5-year (10 terms) Joint Studio “The Culture of Water” began jointly with Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) in autumn 2018. The main target of the whole project is to search for the new definition of Architecture. In order to make it clear, we continue thinking about the relationship between water and architecture, as a reflection to the relationship between nature and the artificial.
To research more precisely, we focus on 2 lakes with different backgrounds – Lake Biwa in Japan and Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. Each semester different sites around the 2 lakes will be researched with a specific topic. Then an architectural design will be developed based on the research. In 5 years, with the results of research and design with varying topics, we may land some hints to the search for the definition of Architecture.
This semester we will continue with the same topic “Water and Beauty” as The Culture of Water vol.4, but move the site from Lake Lucerne to Lake Biwa. Starting with the Eight Views of Ōmi created by Utagawa Hiroshige in 1830s, we will research the past, the present, and then design for the future. What was depicted in the past? What has been left in the present? What can we leave for the future?
A series of 8 strips of land is selected around Southern part of Lake Biwa, referring to the Eight Views of Ōmi. Each strip will be studied online by a team of KIT and HSLU students who remain in contact throughout the semester, based on which every student will then individually develop an architectural design that responds to the singularities typical of the site.
The goal is to find new perspectives of the possible future landscape, with the understanding of our present.
