KYOTO Design Labでは、ポルトガルを代表する建築事務所「アイレス・マテウス」を率いる兄弟建築家、マヌエル・アイレス・マテウス氏とフランシスコ・アイレス・マテウス氏を迎え、公開レクチャーを2日連続で開催します。両氏それぞれの視点から語られる建築の思索に触れる貴重な機会となります。

建築は、リサーチと実験に根ざしたプロセスとして展開し、大規模なプロジェクトから親密な住空間に至るまで、連続的に広がっていきます。各作品は文脈への応答として構想され、丁寧な観察と協働的な実践を通じて発展します。この探究を支えるのは、記憶・物質・限界・光・空間・抵抗という六つの反復するテーマです。これらのテーマは探究の道具として機能し、建築が知覚を変容させ、連続性を形づくる力を与えます。
グランドラの住宅、レゲンゴ・ペケーノにおける反転住宅、エストレーラ山脈の温浴施設、さらにランスやトゥールーズでの文化的介入といった事例は、建築が場所にしっかりと根差しつつ、思索を喚起するものであることを示しています。模型やドローイングは探究の実験室として位置づけられ、精緻さと開放性のバランスを保ちながら機能しています。
産業遺構の再利用を扱った展覧会《Scarti》からトゥールの現代美術センターに至るまで、建築は絶え間ない探究として追求されています。すなわち、形態と素材が、光・文脈・時間を通じてどのように人間の経験を枠づけ得るのかを問い続ける営みなのです。

フランシスコ・アイレス・マテウス
1964年リスボン生まれ。リスボン工科大学で建築を学んだ後、1998年に兄マヌエル・アイレス・マテウスとともに建築事務所「アイレス・マテウス」を設立。
活動は個人住宅から都市インフラまで多岐にわたり、さまざまな用途や規模の建築・施設を手がけている。なかでも文化施設に強い関心を寄せ、その分野で数多くの成果を挙げてきた。受賞や出版で広く知られる代表作には、アルカセル・ド・サルの高齢者施設や、カスカイスのサンタ・マルタ灯台美術館がある。近年のプロジェクトには、トゥールのオリヴィエ・ドゥブレ現代美術センター、ランス美術館、トゥールーズのオーギュスタン美術館などがある
教育者としても長年にわたり活動しており、1998年からリスボン自治大学、2001年からメンドリジオ建築アカデミーで教鞭を執っている。さらに、オスロ建築大学やハーバード大学デザイン大学院など、世界各地の大学でも教育活動を展開してきた。

Architecture unfolds as a process rooted in research and experimentation, moving seamlessly from large-scale projects to intimate domestic spaces. Each work is conceived as a response to context, developing through attentive observation and collaborative practice. Six recurring themes structure this exploration: memory, matter, limit, light, space, and resistance. These themes operate as tools of investigation, shaping the capacity of architecture to transform perception and define continuity. Works such as the House in Grândola, the inverted house at Reguengo Pequeno, the Thermal Baths in Serra da Estrela, and cultural interventions in Reims and Toulouse, illustrate how architecture can provoke reflection while remaining firmly anchored to place. Models and drawings serve as laboratories of inquiry, balancing precision and openness. From the reuse of industrial remains in the exhibition Scarti to the Contemporary Arts Centre in Tours, architecture is pursued as an ongoing investigation into how form and material, through light, context, and time, can frame human experience.

Francisco Aires Mateus
Francisco Aires Mateus (Lisboa, 1964) graduated in architecture at the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. In 1998 he founded the studio Aires Mateus with his brother.
His work ranges from single family housing to urban infrastructures, passing through buildings and equipment with different programs and scales, with a special vocation for buildings with cultural programs. Among his most awarded and published projects, stand out the residence for elderly in Alcácer do Sal and the Santa Marta Lighthouse Museum in Cascais. Some of his most recent projects are the Contemporary Centre Olivier Debrè in Tours, the Fine Art Museum in Reims, and the Augustins Museum in Toulouse.
Francisco Aires Mateus has been a professor at the Accademia di Architettura de Mendrisio since 2001, and at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa since 1998. He taught in several universities around the world, such as the Oslo School of Architecture and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
