京都工芸繊維大学 KYOTO Design Labでは、世界的に著名なポルトガルの建築家マヌエル・アイレス・マテウス氏による公開レクチャー「Architecture as Investigation」を開催します。
建築は、各委託の始まりから最終的な具現化に至るまで、世界を省察するための方法として現れます。すべてのプロジェクトは定型的な解答からではなく、必ず「問い」から始まります。それは調査であり、理解する手段であり、歴史や理論に向き合い、現在を解釈する営みです。
それぞれの作品は独自の発見を体現し、その唯一性を形づくります。課題の始まりから終わりに至るまで、その限界を探り、質の真の尺度として「一貫性」を追求することが使命です。
建築は石や木やコンクリート、小さな住宅から広大な公共空間に至るまで、あらゆるスケールで存在します。しかし常に共通する野心は「人が生きる世界に新しいヴィジョンを提案すること」です。建築は空間の文化的な認識を高め、時間を超えて持続し、抵抗し得るものを提供すべきです。忍耐、粘り強さ、一貫性を通して、建築は意味を獲得します。
建築の営みは建物を超え、世界を見て、知るための方法となり、ひいては世界と関わり続ける最も深いかたちの一つとなるのです。

マヌエル・アイレス・マテウス
1963年リスボン生まれ。1986年にリスボン大学建築学部を卒業し、1988年に兄フランシスコ・アイレス・マテウスと共にアイレス・マテウス事務所を設立。1986年以降、ハーバード大学デザイン大学院、オスロ建築大学、リュブリャナ大学建築学部など、複数の大学で教育活動に携わる。1998年からリスボン・オートノマ大学で、2001年からはスイス・メンドリジオ建築アカデミーで教鞭をとっている。
これまでにヴェネチア建築ビエンナーレに度々参加しており、さらに2018年のモロッコ・ラバトにおける建築ビエンナーレ「Villa et Culture」、2017年のミラノデザインウィーク、シカゴ建築ビエンナーレなどにも参加。最近では、2021年のソウル建築都市ビエンナーレにおいて《TO INHABIT》プロジェクトを発表した。
同スタジオは国内外で数多くの賞を受賞しており、AITアワード、ヴァルモール賞、セシル賞、FADアワード、エコラ賞、ENOR賞、さらにイベロアメリカ都市計画・建築ビエンナーレ（2001年、2012年、2019年）での受賞、ミース・ファン・デル・ローエ賞の候補選出などがある。2017年にはマヌエル・アイレス・マテウス自身がポルトガル最高の文化賞のひとつであるペソア賞を受賞。
スタジオの活動は常に「記憶」と「知識」の役割、そして物理的世界と文化的世界の関係に重ねられてきた。彼らの仕事は、私たちを取り巻くあらゆるスケールを省察の対象とし、時間の連続性の中で形と物質性の普遍的な在り方を探求している。

KYOTO Design Lab will host a public lecture, “Architecture as Investigation,” by the internationally renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus.
From the origin of each commission to its ultimate materialisation, architecture emerges as a way of reflecting on the world. Every project begins with a question, never with a formula: it is an investigation, a means to understand, to confront history and theory, to interpret the present. Each work embodies a distinct idea — a discovery that defines its uniqueness. The task is to explore the limits of each challenge, from its beginnings to its ends, and to seek coherence as the true measure of quality. Architecture exists at multiple scales — in stone, wood, or concrete; in small houses or vast public spaces — but always with the same ambition: to propose a vision for the world that is inhabited. Architecture should elevate the cultural perception of space, offering permanence and resistance over time. Through patience, persistence, and coherence, architecture acquires meaning. Beyond buildings, architectural work becomes a way of seeing and knowing the world, and perhaps the most profound way to remain engaged with it.

Manuel Aires Mateus
Manuel Aires Mateus was born in Lisbon in 1963. He graduated from Faculdade de Arquitetura de Lisboa in 1986, having founded the studio Aires Mateus in 1988 with his brother Francisco Aires Mateus. He has worked with several universities since 1986, such as the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Oslo Architecture School and the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ljubljana, among others. Since 1998, he teaches at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and, since 2001, at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, Switzerland.
Aires Mateus has participated in several Venice Architecture Biennales and they were also present at the Architecture Biennale Villa et Culture in Rabat (Morocco, 2018), at Milan Design Week (2017) and at the Chicago Architecture Biennial. They were recently at the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (2021) with the project TO INHABIT.
The studio has also been awarded several national and international prizes, including the AIT Award, Valmor Prize, Secil Prize, FAD Awards, Ecola Prize, ENOR Prize as well as the prize of the Ibero-American Urban Planning and Architecture Biennale (2001, 2012, 2019) and the selection for the Mies van der Rohe Prize. In 2017, Manuel Aires Mateus was awarded with the Pessoa Prize.
The studio has always dealt with the role of memory and knowledge, with the relationship between the physical and the cultural world. The work seeks to reflect on every scale surrounding us. It searches for the perennial state of shapes and materiality in the continuity of time.
