KYOTO Design Labは2014年12月、RCAデザインインタラクション専攻との共同で、ロボティックスをテーマとしたヘルスケア・フューチャーズ・ワークショップを、RCAのアンソニー・ダン教授とジェームス・オージャー博士、そしてジュリア・カセムD-lab特任教授による指導のもと実施しました。
フランク・
コークマンは、RCAからこのワークショップに参加した一人の学生でした。そこで彼が開発したアイデアは、自身の修了制作である、Open Surgery – a do-it-yourself surgery robot for domestic laparoscopy. [ http://prix2016.aec.at/prixwinner/21396/ ]の基盤となりました 。
DIY Healthcare, Design work in Healthcare Futures Workshop, RCA + KYOTO Design Lab, 2014
このスペキュラティブなデザイン作品は、多くの人にとって手が届かないほど高価なプロによる医療サービスに替わる適切な代替品として、DIYによる手術器具は可能であるか、という問いを追究するもので、2016 Prix Ars Electronic（2016年アルス・エレクトロニカ賞）において優秀賞を受賞しました。同作品は、オーストリア・リンツで9月8～12日に開催される アルス・エレクトロニカ・フェスティバル にて展示されます。
2015年にRCAを卒業後、フランクは、KYOTO Design Labのデザインアソシエートとして、京都工芸繊維大学応用生物学部門ショウジョウバエ遺伝資源センターの山口政光教授および研究チームと共同研究を行いました。その成果物である「Designs for Flies – 家庭用疾患治療薬スクリーニング・キット」は、Dutch Design Awardsのサービス・システム部門において最終候補作品に選ばれています。この作品は、オランダ・アイントホーフェンで10月22～30日に開催されるDutch Design Week にて展示されることになっています。

In December 2014, Kyoto D-lab held a Healthcare Futures Workshop centering on robotics in collaboration with the RCA’s Design Interactions Course at the Royal College of Art. It was led by Professor Anthony Dunne and James Auger and D-lab’s Professor Julia Cassim.
Frank Kolkman was one of the five RCA students who took part. The idea he developed then became the basis for his graduation work – Open Surgery – a do-it-yourself surgery robot for domestic laparoscopy. [ http://prix2016.aec.at/prixwinner/21396/ ]

This speculative design project examines the question as to whether do-it-yourself surgical tools could be a suitable alternative to costly professional health services that are unaffordable to many people. The project won an Award of Distinction at the 2016 Prix Ars Electronica and will be on display at the Ars Electronica Festival from 8- 12 September, in Linz, Austria.
On graduation from the RCA in 2015, Frank became a Kyoto D-lab Design Associate working with Professor Masamitsu Yamaguchi and his team in the Department of Applied Biology and the Drosophila Genetic Resource Centre at KIT. The resulting project Designs For Flies – a domestic test kit for user-participatory drug screening has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Service and Systems category of the Dutch Design Awards and will be on show during Dutch Design Week from 22- 30 October in Eindhoven.
