フランク・コークマン氏が、KYOTO Design Lab（D-lab）デザイン・アソシエイトとして本学在籍中に実施したプロジェクトを含むこれまでの活動が評価され、栄誉あるDutch Design Awards (DDA) Young Designer部門の2017年度ファイナリストに選ばれました。D-labと協力して開発した2つのプロジェクトが、この賞の選考理由になっています。
フランク・コークマン氏は、英国王立芸術学院（RCA・デザイン・インタラクション）に学び、2015年10月よりデザイン・アソシエイトとしてD-labに在籍したオランダ人デザイナーです。D-labのジュリア・カセム特任教授の監修のもと、フランク氏と本学応用生物学部門の山口政光教授、日本シャルコー・マリー・トゥース病センター、京都府立医科大学との共同研究として開発した「Designs for Flies－家庭用疾患治療薬スクリーニング・キット」は、2016年にはDutch Design Awardsのサービス・システム部門を受賞しています。
今回は「Designs for Flies」を含め、クリティカル・デザイン、スペクラティヴ・デザインの文脈におけるこれまでのコークマン氏のプロジェクトが評価され、Young Designer部門の2017年度ファイナリストに選ばれました。最終的な受賞者は10月に発表予定です。

Frank Kolkman, the Dutch designer from Royal College of Art [RCA] Design Interactions who was D-lab’s Design Associate in 2016 was selected as one of three finalists in the prestigious Dutch Design Awards in its Young Designer Award category. Two projects developed in collaboration with D-lab were the rationale for the award.
As D-Lab’s Design Associate, his ‘Designs for Flies’ project was jointly developed with Professor Masamitsu Yamaguchi of KIT’s Department of Applied Biology, the Drosophila Genetic Resource Centre, Charcot Marie Tooth Japan and the Kyoto Prefectural University Hospital. It was Initiated and supervised by Professor Julia Cassim and won the Dutch Design Award in its Services and Systems category 2016.

The inspiring, conceptual and ground-breaking work, but most especially Frank Kolkman’s research and methods are very strong. He is able to make his sometimes complex work accessible for a wide public. He is also verbally and visually strong and he is able to work with different disciplines and cultures. This combination of skills is as essential as it is exceptional and the committee sees the complete package in Kolkman. His designs offer relevant possible solutions for the healthcare sector and involve patients in their own process. He reflects on extremely urgent matters and the processes and systems that hide behind them. Despite the often speculative start of his designs, Kolkman strives to create practical implementation and this can certainly be considered unique in his chosen area.
