本学岩本馨准教授の著書『明暦の大火 「都市改造」という神話』が吉川弘文館より刊行されました。
江戸三大大火の中でももっとも広範に被害を出し、ローマ大火などとともに世界史上最大級の惨事として知られる「明暦の大火」（明暦３年旧暦１月18〜20日（1657年３月２〜４日）。本書は、この大火によって江戸の大半を焼失し、その後行われた「都市改造」が新たな江戸を創り上げたという通説を全面的に問い直します。そしてその復興の道程と、「都市改造」神話が生み出されていく過程を精緻に分析し、明暦の大火の悲劇を主題とした仮名草子『むさしあぶみ』の功罪を含め、知られざる実像に迫っています。

岩本 馨
京都工芸繊維大学 准教授（都市史）
1978年北九州市生まれ。2000年東京大学工学部建築学科卒業。2006年同大学大学院工学系研究科博士課程終了、博士（工学）。現在、京都工芸繊維大学大学院工芸科学研究科准教授。

Associate Professor Kaoru Iwamoto’s book [The Great fire of Meireki, Reconsidering the “urban renewal” myth] was published by Japanese publishing company Yoshikawa Kobunkan.
The Great Fire of Meireki: March 2–4, 1657 (Meireki 3, 18th-19th days of the 1st month) caused the most widespread damage among the three great fires of Edo. It is considered to have been the most disastrous fire in the history of the world along with the Great Fire of Rome.
This book investigates extensively the reality behind the commonly accepted theory that most of Edo was burned by this great fire and that the aftermath of “Urban renewal” created a new Edo.
The book goes into detail the road to reconstruction, analysing the ”Urban renewal” process which was created from myths and including “Musashi Abumi” Kanazōshi recording of the tragedy of the Great fire of Meireki. Approaching real image of the unknown.
