『archithese』は1971年創刊のスイスの建築専門誌です。毎年恒例の特集「Swiss Performance」では、前年にスイス国内外でスイス人建築家が手がけた注目プロジェクトを紹介しており、今号はその2026年版として、新築・改修・高層建築・スタジオアパートメント・インフラ・アート・インスタレーションなど多岐にわたる計22プロジェクトを収録しています。
掲載論考について
ビライ教授の論考「Lightness, Temporality, and Architecture as Research」は、2025年大阪・関西万博においてManuel Herz Architectsが設計したスイスパビリオンを論じたものです。ETFE膜を用いた軽量構造体であるスイスパビリオンが、視覚的な壮観さではなく、素材の経済性・仮設性・体験の質を通じて建築的存在感を示す様を丁寧に読み解いています。京都工芸繊維大学 KYOTO Design Labは同パビリオンのアカデミックパートナーとして、スタジオやワークショップ、会場での実践活動を通じてパビリオンの企画・設計・建設・その後の行方に学術的研究と教育を結びつけました。論考ではこの協働を通じて、パビリオンが研究・教育・社会的実践の場として機能した経緯にも言及しています。

An article by Professor Erwin Viray, Director of KYOTO Design Lab, has been published in the Swiss architectural journal “archithese”, Issue 1.2026 (feature: Swiss Performance 2026).
About the Journal
“archithese” is a Swiss architectural journal founded in 1971. Its annual feature “Swiss Performance” presents a selection of noteworthy projects completed the previous year by Swiss architects in Switzerland and abroad. This issue, the 2026 edition, brings together 22 wide-ranging projects — from new buildings and conversions to high-rise buildings, studio apartments, infrastructure, and art installations.
About the Article
Professor Viray’s article, “Lightness, Temporality, and Architecture as Research,” examines the Swiss Pavilion designed by Manuel Herz Architects for Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai. The article offers a close reading of how the pavilion — a lightweight structural framework enveloped by an ETFE membrane — articulates architectural presence not through visual spectacle, but through material economy, temporality, and the quality of lived experience. KYOTO Design Lab, Kyoto Institute of Technology served as Academic Partner for the pavilion, connecting academic research and teaching directly into the pavilion’s development, construction, and afterlife through studios, workshops, and on-site activities. The article also reflects on how this collaboration allowed the pavilion to function as a site of research, pedagogy, and social practice.
