ラジオは心の劇場と呼べよう。お話し、ニュースや情報が時空間を交差して見えない波に乗って届けられる。電波は彼方の銀河を描き、彼方の地のさまを図像化させる。レクチャーでは、どのように情報を経験に転位させるか、そのあり方を人的・技術的な遮断、翻訳、変換、サンプリングや合成などのプロセスを通じて議論していく。

「真実は小説よりも強し、しかし小説は、さらに多くの真実を人生に与える。」読むことにはいろんな方法がある。概念的意味では、積極的と消極的プロセスがあり、単に製作の意味合いではなく、読むことは物体、観客、社会的関係——あるいは、ディスコースそのものとの遭遇となろう。このレクチャーでは意味の本質や可能性、解釈の限界などを探っていく。解釈とは、翻案、翻訳、蒸留、転換、侵害など様々な形式でおこなわれる。いかに意味を生み出し、物語るためにテキストやイメージ、ものに取り組めるかに集中し、いかにものが我々をアイデアや人々につなげるのかを考察し、「思考の仲間」としてのものの豊饒さを探求していく。

Radio as Theatre of the Mind
Radio is called the theatre of the mind. Stories, news and information are carried on invisible waves across time and space. Radio waves enable us to make pictures of distant galaxies and to imaging pictures of distant places. This lecture will discuss the nature of how we translate information into experience, through human and technological processes of interception, translation, transduction, sampling and synthesis.

Acts of Reading
“Truth may be stranger than fiction, but fiction adds more truth to life.” There are many ways of reading. In a conceptual sense, reading is both an active and a passive process. Rather than simply producing meaning, reading may become an encounter with an object, an audience or social context – or with a discourse itself. This lecture looks at the nature of meaning and the possibilities and limits of interpretation. Interpretation can take many forms, but it can be also be understood as adaptation, translation, distillation, conversion or piracy. The lecture centres on how we might work with texts, images and objects to create meaning and tell stories. It will consider how objects connect us to ideas and to people, and investigate the richness of objects as our ‘thought companions’.
