Summary:
In Product Ceramic & Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins, we are endeavouring to develop forms of deliberative naivete as methodologies. For instance, we have come to introduce students to MA Industrial Design with a statement which might seem strange for people who are expected to be guiding the development of design practitioners. That statement is: “we know that we don’t know”.
What we do know however, is that new capacities, technologies and networks present significant challenges and opportunities, but also pose enigmas such that neatly expressed by Bruce Mau in the question “Now that we can do anything, what will we do?”.
The ensuing question for educators addressed in this lecture; is how we might prepare students best to navigate and thrive through future scenarios – to form rather than react to new circumstances?

Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert, E2A “arbitrariness and need”

Summary:
The brothers, Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert, both graduated from the ETH Zurich in 1994 and 1995. After their studies they joined OMA, working from 1994 to 1997 in Rotterdam, Los Angeles and Seoul. In 2001 Piet and Wim established E2A. They have taught at several schools and universities in Europe and are currently guest professors at the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio. Their work has been widely published including the comprehensive monograph E2A in 2011 with Hatje Cantz, Silent Form in 2014 with Park Books and more recently the new monograph by 2G Magazine of Gustavo Gili Editors. Their work has expanded geographically and typologically with projects in the realm of the public, cultural, corporate, commercial and the housing sector. Their methodology of work confronts idealism with an inventory of realities. Out of this confrontation a sense of irony arises, a pleasure and a strategic contradiction to reassess an omnipresent burden of context and program. Desire and reality, narrative and analysis form an increasingly conflicted relationship. Therefore, E2A’s contributions do not necessarily adhere to a single vision of cohesion, but rather integrate discrepancies and disruptions with implicit organizational logic. Constraints are converted into architectural forms.

E2A [Piet Eckrt and Wim Eckert]
Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert are brothers. Both graduated from the ETH in Zurich in 1994 and 1995. Both worked from 1994 till 1997 at OMA in Rotterdam, Los Angeles and Seoul. They have taught at several schools and universities in Europe and are currently guest professors at the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio.
Best known among their realized projects are the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin, the auditorium and library in Staefa, the high-rise apartment building Escherterraces with rehearsal stages of the Zurich Opera House as well as the housing project Escherpark in Zurich. The current work focuses on the realization of the Taz newspaper and media building in Berlin, a new development for an apartment tower in London, the Europa Allee H-Project, the school campus Moos, both in and near Zurich, the university and business school of Basle and the high-rise slab building for Zurich’s oldest deaconry Bethanien.
