KYOTO Design Lab［D-lab］の取り組みや教員の座談会などが、2冊の書籍、『SPECULATIONS（スペキュレーションズ）―人間中心主義のデザインをこえて』と『クリティカル・デザインとはなにか？：問いと物語を構築するためのデザイン理論入門』（ともにビー・エヌ・エヌ新社）に収録されています。デザイン理論やデザイン手法について広く議論をおこなうべく、ゲストに太田知也氏、川崎和也氏、古賀稔章氏を招き、下記の通りに公開ミニシンポジウムを開催いたします。

「批評的なデザインのゆくえ」
2019年11月に、水野大二郎 特任教授が共同監訳を務めた『クリティカル・デザインとはなにか？：問いと物語を構築するためのデザイン理論入門』（ビー・エヌ・エヌ新社）が刊行されました。本書には、セントラル・セント・マーチンズ（ロンドン）のデザイン研究者であるマット・マルパス氏による、インダストリアル・デザインを足場にした「クリティカル・デザイン」の歴史や理論がまとめられています。日本語版に収録された座談会には、本学から岡田栄造教授、そしてデザインリサーチャー・イン・レジデンスとして招聘研究に取り組まれた岩渕正樹氏が参加しています。
D-labでは、水野大二郎特任教授ならびに本書の共同監訳をされた太田知也氏、スペキュラティヴ・ファッション・デザイナーの川崎和也氏、デザイン研究者の古賀稔章氏を交えたミニ・シンポジウムを開催いたします。
1990年半ばにロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アート（ロンドン）ではじまったクリティカル・デザインは、のちにスペキュラティヴ・デザインとして引き継がれ、2013年には『Speculative Everything』の出版によって世に広く提起されました。それからおよそ６年。クリティカル／スペキュラティヴ・デザインの理論的な枠組みとともに課題までもが明らかになってきた今、あらためてそれらが持つ可能性について考えることは、現在におけるデザインの批評的な役割を捉え直すことでもあります。
そこで本ミニ・シンポジウムでは、マルパス氏のテキストからこぼれおちてしまったデザインの取り組みを回収しつつ、批評的な（クリティカル・）デザインについて再検討します。デザイン領域における批評、あるいは批評的実践のこの先のあり方について思索できればと思いますので、ぜひご参加ください。

Speculating the Future of Speculative & Critical Design
In November 2019, ‘Critical Design in Context History, Theory, and Practices’ translated into Japanese was published by BNN Publisher under the joint supervision of Professor Daijiro Mizuno. This book summarizes the history and theory of “Critical Design” based on industrial design by Matt Malpass, a design researcher at Central St. Martins. The round-table discussion in the Japanese version was attended by Professor Eizo Okada from the University of Tokyo and Masaki Iwabuchi, who participated as a Design Researcher in Residence 2019.
At D-lab, we will be holding a mini-symposium with Professor Daijiro Mizuno, Mr. Tomoya Ota who co-supervised this book, Mr. Kazuya Kawasaki who is a specular fashion designer, and Mr. Toshiaki Koga who is a design researcher.
Starting with the Royal College of Art in mid- 1990, the critical design was later passed on as the specular design, which was popularized by the publication of ‘Speculative Everything’ in 2013. About six years have passed since then. Now that the challenges have come to light along with the theoretical framework of critical/specular design, it is time to rethink the critical role of design today to rethink its possibilities.
This mini-symposium will revisit critical design while recalling design efforts that have fallen off Malpass’s text. I hope you’ll be able to think about the future of critique or critical practice in the design area.
