「BANGKOK BASTARDS AND RURAL CROSSBREEDS」

Bangkok Bastardsは、日常的な問題を解決するために、日常的な人々によってつくられた日常的な建築物である。
建設労働者の仮設住宅から、違法なスラム街、地下のセックス・モーテルに至るまで、タイの首都バンコクにはこうしたストリート・ヴァナキュラー建築が点在している。 Bastardsは、安価な地元の廃材を使い、シンプルかつ独創的な方法で建てられている。 その非合法な出自と「安っぽい」外見から、Bastardsはバンコクの人々からは、低俗で洗練されていない、街の汚れた傷跡として見られている。 しかし、都市の現実的な課題に対する正直で巧妙かつ即興的な対応から、Bangkok Bastardsはタイのアーバニズムにおけるバナキュラー建築の最も本格的で適切な例であると言える。
「Bastards research」は、同事務所のマルチスケール・プロジェクトを発展させる基盤となっている。 「BastardのBastard化」と呼ばれるプロセスを通じて、既存のBastardsを他のハイブリッド、新しく考案されたプログラム、都市／社会／生態学的ジレンマと交配し、変形させることで、地元に根ざした新しいハイブリッドを生み出している。 さらに最近では、「Rural Crossbreeds（田舎の雑種）」を求めて、タイの田舎にまでBastardデザインの研究を広げている。

チャトポン・チュエンルディーモル

1994年にカリフォルニア大学バークレー校で建築学士号を、2000年にハーバード大学デザイン大学院で建築学修士号を取得。 米国での学業を終えた後、生まれ故郷のバンコクに戻り、リサーチとデザインを融合させたCHAT architectsを設立。地域の再解釈を通じてコミュニティの活性化を目指す革新的なマルチスケールプロジェクトを生み出している。2015年には、Bangkok Bastardsと親しみを込めて呼ばれる、新しいタイ固有の “ストリート”タイポロジーを発見することを目的としたリサーチ・シンクタンク、CHAT labを設立した。
近年のプロジェクトでは、Angsila Oyster Scaffolding Pavilionが、2023年世界建築祭のインターナショナル・ビルディング・ビューティ・アワード、ソウル・デザイン・アワードのベスト・オブ・ザ・ベスト、2023年台湾ゴールデンピン・デザイン・アワードの最優秀公共空間賞、オーストラリア・グッドデザイン賞の最優秀公共空間賞金賞など、世界的な賞を受賞。 2022年、SalaAreeya Yoga ResidenceがArchitectural Review誌のARハウス・アワードを受賞。2020年、Samsen STREET Hotelが、Architectural Review誌の「New into Old」賞のファイナリストに選ばれ、INDE.AWARDのアジア太平洋地域のビルディング・オブ・ザ・イヤーを受賞。 2020年には、タイ芸術文化省とシリントーン王女殿下から贈られる、タイの現代アーティストに対する最高賞「シルパトーン賞」を受賞。
手がけた作品は国内外で展示されており、最近では2024年広州デザイントリエンナーレの「Bangkok Bastards」展。 2015年には、日本のTOTOギャラリー・間において、「アジアの日常から」と題された30周年記念展で作品が展示された。

“BANGKOK BASTARDS AND RURAL CROSSBREEDS”

Bangkok Bastards are everyday architecture created by everyday people to solve everyday problems.
From temporary construction worker houses to illegal shantytowns to underground sex-motels, these street vernaculars are scattered though out the capital of Thailand. Bastards are built with cheap, local, scavenged materials in simple yet ingenious way. Due to their illegitimate origins and ‘cheap’ appearance, bastards are dismissed by Bangkok-ians as low-brow, unrefined, dirty scars in the city – unworthy of any serious research. However, due to their honest, clever, and improvisational responses to the city’s real-life challenges, it can be argued that Bangkok Bastards are the most authentic and relevant examples of vernacular architecture in Thailand’s urbanism.
CHAT’s “bastards research” has become the foundation on which the office’s multi-scalar projects have been developed. Through a process called “Bastardizing the Bastard”, CHAT creates new locally-rooted hybrids by crossbreeding, transforming, and existing bastards with other hybrids, newly invented programs, and urban/social/ecological dilemas. More recently, the office has expanded its bastard design research into the Thai countryside in its hunt for “Rural Crossbreeds”.

Chatpong “Chat” Chuenrudeemol obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from U.C. Berkeley in 1994 and his Masters of Architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design in 2000. After completing his studies in the US, Chat returned to his birthplace of Bangkok to form CHAT architects, a practice combining research and design, resulting in innovative multi-scalar projects that aim to stimulate community through strategies that re-interpret authentic local conditions. In 2015, he created CHAT lab, a research think tank aimed at discovering new Thai vernacular “street” typologies, affectionately called Bangkok Bastards.
Most recently, CHAT’s Angsila Oyster Scaffolding Pavilion won top global awards including “the International Building Beauty” Award at the 2023 World Architecture Festival, the “Best of the Best” Seoul Design Award for Sustainable Life Award, the 2023 Taiwan Golden Pin Design Award for Best Public Space, and Gold Medal Australian Good Design Awards for Best Public Space. In 2022, CHAT’s SalaAreeya Yoga Residence was a winner of Architectural Review’s AR House Awards (Commended). In 2020, CHAT’s Samsen STREET Hotel was a Finalist of Architectural Review’s “New into Old” Awards and won INDE.AWARD’s Building of the Year Award in the Asia Pacific region. In 2020, Chat received Thailand’s “Silpathorn Award”, the country’s highest award for contemporary artists, presented by the Thailand Ministry of Arts and Culture and Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand.
Chat’s work has been exhibited both at home and abroad, most recently in the “Bangkok Bastards” Exhibition at the 2024 Guangzhou Design Triennale. In 2015, Chat’s work was exhibited in Japan’s prestigious TOTO Gallery Ma in the 30th Anniversary exhibition entitled “The Asian Everyday”.
