KYOTO Design Lab（D-lab）に滞在中のジュリア・ローマンは、京都の竹職人である横山裕樹、D-labファクトリー・スタッフの井上智博との共同により、世界初のレーザーカットされた昆布と竹を融合させた作品シリーズを生み出しました。
作品は、現在ドイツ・ウォルフガング市のアウトシュタット（Autostadt：世界をより良くするデザインに焦点を当てた施設）で、Design Displayシリーズとして展示されています。
D-labでの製作を元に、英国ウォーリック大学アートコレクションの委託を受け、同校ライフサイエンスセンターでさらに大型の海藻と竹のインスタレーションに発展させており、そこでは竹とレーザーカットされた何百ものパターンの海藻の園を通り抜けることができる。
During her residency at Kyoto D-Lab, Julia Lohmann worked with Kyoto bamboo craftsman Yuki Yokoyama and Tomohiro Inoue of D-Lab’s Digital Fabrication workshop to produce a series of works in which laser-cut kelp and bamboo were combined for the first time.
Examples of the work are currently being shown in the Design Display exhibition series at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Germany whose focus is design that can make the world a better place. To that end, two objects enter into a dialogue in an oversized display case.
Based on her work at Kyoto Design Lab, she is currently developing a large-scale kelp-bamboo installation for the Life Sciences Centre of the University of Warwick, UK, commissioned by University of Warwick Art Collection. Visitors will be able to walk through a hybrid bamboo and kelp grove, the latter laser-cut with hundreds of patterns based on the work taking place at the Life Sciences Centre.
