今年初開催となったFiskars Village Art & Design Biennaleは、フィンランド・ヘルシンキから車で1−2時間のところにあるフィスカースという村でおこなわれたアートとデザインの展覧会です。
このビエンナーレ内で、ジャスパー・モリソンがキュレーションするデザインの展覧会「Social Seating」の参加デザイナー18人のひとりとして、中坊壮介准教授が選ばれ、中坊准教授がデザインしたベンチ「Grate」が展示されました。
「Social Seating」は、18人のデザイナーによるベンチが、フィスカース村周辺の小道やビエンナーレの会場間をつなぐ経路上に置かれた展覧会です。デザイナーたちは、ジャスパー・モリソンからの「ベンチをデザインして設置する」という明確でシンプルな要望に答えました。
中坊准教授コメント
コスト以外に素材などの制約はなく、Fiskarsの小川沿いに並ぶ、少なくとも2人が座れるベンチをデザインするというものでした。さまざまな国籍や年齢のデザイナー18名が参加するとのことで、この土地の文脈や「Social Seating」というテーマもさることながら、自分の立ち位置や役割が重要だと考えました。「Grate」では、無理や無駄のない構造と、Fiskarsの気候に耐え、馴染む素材や、その組み合わせを同時に成立させる、細やかに調律された簡素ながら強い佇まいのベンチを目指しました。

Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale combines art and design and will engage artists, designers, local communities and various audiences. Organized for the first time ever, this biennale consists of three exhibitions supported by parallel programme. Associate professor Sosuke Nakabo was chosen as one of 18 participating designers of the exhibition ‘Social Seating’ curated by Jasper Morrison.
As one could expect from Morrison, the brief for the designer was clear and simple: design and build a bench. The bench is designed to be shared, thus beautifully reflecting the Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale’s message of coexistence. Associate Professor Sosuke Nakabo has designed a bench ‘Grate’ made with a lean structure and materials that fits the Fiskars climate.
