KYOTO Design Labでは、ロンドンを拠点に設計実践と批評活動で国際的な評価を受ける建築家・デザイナーのジル・レツィン氏、そしてニューヨークを拠点に建築環境に関するリサーチとプロジェクトを展開するClouds AOの共同設立者、曽野正之氏をお迎えし、公開レクチャーを開催します。
地球規模での環境危機が叫ばれるいま、建築を取り巻く複雑な問題系に立ち向かう、研究と実務の間を横断的に行き来する実践と知の重要性が増しています。今まさに進行している破壊的な技術革新のただ中で、私たちは何を探求し、実践に移し、その中からまたいかなる次の問いを立ち上げるのか。
本レクチャーではロンドンで立ち上げられた、ロボティクスにより全自動で住宅供給を行う革新的なテックスタートアップであるAutomated Architecture、ニューヨークで宇宙での居住をリサーチしながら3Dプリントを核とした実験的な建築を手がけるClouds AOを取り上げ、その研究の軌跡、社会実装への翻訳、そしてその軌跡が私たちをどんな新たな問いへと導く状況を生み出しているのかに迫ります。

ジル・レツィン Gilles Retsin
ベルギー出身。ロンドン在住の建築家・デザイナー。ベルギー、チリ、英国で建築を学び、Architectural Association を卒業。ニューヨークのMuseum of Arts and Design、ロンドンのRoyal Academy、パリのポンピドゥー・センターなど主要文化機関での受賞・講演・展示を通じ、その設計実践と批評は国際的な評価を得ている。『Architectural Design（AD）』誌で「The Discrete」特集号の編集を務め、『Robotic Building: Architecture in the Age of Automation』（Detail Verlag, 2019）を共編者。UCL AUAR Labs の共同創設者として、設計・製作技術に関する先端研究を牽引し、その成果を元にアフォーダブル住宅のオートメーションプラットフォームを提供するスピンアウト企業 AUAR ltd を共同設立。
曽野正之 Masayuki Sono
2010年にオスタップ・ルダケヴィッチと共にニューヨークに設立したClouds AOの設立パートナー。同事務所は、建築環境の体験的な質のデザインと、大気圏及び宇宙空間における建築的居住性を検証するリサーチベースド・コンセプトに焦点を当てた探求を行っている。同事務所はNASAの「火星向け3Dプリント居住施設設計競技」で優勝し、勝利案の開発に向けラングレー研究センターとの協業を開始した。現在、国連と連携しウクライナにおける3Dプリンターを用いた復興プロジェクトが進行中であり、最新の火星都市構想は第19回ヴェネチア建築ビエンナーレで公開されている。ニューヨーク市が建設したスタテンアイランド9.11メモリアル設計コンペでの優勝デザインで世界的な評価を得て、米国建築家協会公共プロジェクト賞を受賞。ワシントン大学と神戸大学で修士号を取得し、プラット・インスティテュートで教鞭を執った経歴を持つ。

KYOTO Design Lab is pleased to host a public lecture featuring architect and designer Gilles Retsin, based in London and internationally recognised for his design work and critical discourse, and Masayuki Sono, co-founder of Clouds Architecture Office in New York, which explores experiential qualities of the built environment and research-driven architectural concepts.
Amidst the global environmental crisis, the importance of practice and knowledge that traverses the boundaries between research and practice to confront the complex issues surrounding architecture is growing. In the midst of the disruptive technological innovation unfolding right now, what should we explore, put into practice, and what new questions should we raise from within that?
This lecture invites Automated Architecture, a London-based tech startup revolutionizing housing supply through fully automated robotics, and Clouds AO, a New York-based firm researching space habitation while creating experimental architecture centered on 3D printing. We delve into their research trajectories, the translation of their work into societal implementation, and the new questions their paths are generating for us.

Gilles Retsin
Originally from Belgium, Gilles Retsin is an architect and designer living in London. He studied architecture in Belgium, Chile and the UK, where he graduated from the Architectural Association. His design work and critical discourse has been internationally recognised through awards, lectures and exhibitions at major cultural institutions such as the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Royal Academy in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He edited an issue of Architectural Design (AD) on the Discrete and has co-edited Robotic Building: Architecture in the Age of Automation, with Detail Verlag. He is co-founder of UCL AUAR Labs, which does high profile research into new design and fabrication technologies and its spin-out company AUAR ltd, a start-up working towards an automated platform for affordable housing.
Masayuki Sono
Masayuki Sono is a co-founder of Clouds Architecture Office based in New York, founded in 2010 with Ostap Rudakevych. The firm’s explorations focus on design of experiential qualities of built environment and research-based concepts that test architectural inhabitation of the atmosphere and outer space. The firm won NASA’s 3D Printed Habitat Design Competition for Mars and began collaboration with Langley Research Center to develop the winning concept. Currently reconstruction project in Ukraine with United Nations using 3D printer is in progress, and their latest Mars city proposal can be viewed at the 19th Venice Biennale of Architecture. Masa gained worldwide acclaim for his winning design for the competition of Staten Island 9/11 Memorial built by the City of New York, which received American Institute of Architects Public Project Award. He holds Masters Degrees from University of Washington and Kobe University, and has taught at Pratt Institute.
