KYOTO Design Lab［D-lab］は、2018年度デザイン・アソシエイトとしてD-labと共同研究をおこなうマーク・ラバン［セントラル・セント・マーチンズ］、ネスター・ペスタナ［RCA］によるパブリックレクチャーを開催します。
マーク・ラバンはデジタル技術と手作業の製造プロセスの関係を模索するプロダクトデザイナー、ネスター・ペスタナは科学、デザイン、テクノロジーを領域横断するスペキュラティヴデザイナーです。今回のレクチャーでは、それぞれのデザインアプローチについてプレゼンテーションしていただきながら、D-labでおこなうプロジェクトの内容についてご紹介します。

概要
伝統的および現代的な工芸が交差するマーク・ラバンの実践は、デジタル製造技術の現代的な言語による素朴な形態と機能性の概念を探求し、解釈します。彼のデザインアプローチは、手作業による制作、素材の探索、製造プロセスにおける直接的なかかわりを通した実験によって定義されています。今回のプレゼンテーションでは、彼の作品やデザインプロセスを詳細に解説し、KYOTO Design Labでの彼のリサーチの役割を検証します。

Mark Laban [Central St Martins, UAL]
マーク・ラバン
2016年にセントラル・セント・マーチンズにて家具デザインの修士号を取得。現在はオーダーメイド家具の注文を受注する家具デザイナーとしてとしてロンドンで活動している。最近の作品はロンドンのAram Galleryにて展示されている。Rustic Stool 1.0が2017年のWood AwardsにてStudent Prizeを受賞。

概要
ネスター・ペスタナの作品は、私たちが生きる動乱したハイテク時代の時代精神に言及します。この時代精神とは、人間の標準化に抗い、新しいテクノロジーによって定義、拡張され、永久に変化し続ける身体の可能性を模索するものです。哲学的、科学的、デザインベースのアプローチを用いて、私たちの技術環境の複雑な社会的側面を模索します。
今回のレクチャーでは、彼のKYOTO Design Labにおける研究概要と最近のプロジェクトを、映像とプレゼンテーションを用いて紹介します。

Nestor Pestana [Royal College of Art]
ネスター・ペスタナ
ポルトガル出身。英国王立芸術学院のデザイン・インタラクションにて修士号を取得。スペキュラティヴ・デザイナー、マルチメディア・アーティストとして現在ロンドンを拠点に活動している。科学とデザインとテクノロジーの繋がりを模索しながら、領域横断的でコラボレイティブな作品を制作し、イギリスやその他諸外国にてセミナー、ワークショップ、講演などの活動も行なっている。彼のプロジェクトは、映像、イラストレーション、インスタレーションなど様々なメディアによって表現される。最近の展示ではロンドン・カレッジ・オブ・ファッションにおけるPlumial Space、ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ国際建築展におけるSchool of Tomorrowなどがある。

Summary
Situated at an intersection where traditional and contemporary craft converge, Mark Laban’s practice explores and interprets notions of rustic form and functionality through the contemporary language of digital manufacturing technology. His design approach is defined by experimentation through hands on making, material exploration and direct engagement with manufacturing process. The presentation will explore and explain his work and it’s design process in more detail, as well as elaborating on his research role at KYOTO Design Lab.

Mark Laban [Central St Martins, UAL]
Mark Laban holds a BA in Fine Art and graduated from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London in 2016 with an MA in Design specialising in furniture. His practice is based in London where he works as a furniture designer and maker undertaking bespoke commissions. Mark’s recent work has been exhibited in London’s Aram Gallery, and his ‘Rustic Stool 1.0’ was selected as winner of the Wood Awards student/graduate designer category in 2017.

Speculative Design and the New Human
Summary
Nestor Pestana’s work touches on the zeitgeist of our agitated technological age – rejecting the standardisation of human beings, and examining possibilities for an endlessly shifting body augmented and defined by emerging technologies. Combining philosophic, scientific and design-based approaches, he explores the intricate social aspects of our technological environments.
Part film screening, part presentation, his talk will focus on recent projects and give an overview of the current research Pestana is developing at KYOTO Design Lab.

Nestor Pestana [Royal College of Art]
Nestor Pestana is a Portuguese speculative designer and multimedia artist based in London. His work is collaborative and multidisciplinary, exploring the links between science, design and technology. Nestor has organised and presented seminars, workshops, and talks in the U.K. and overseas.
Projects are expressed through a variety of media – moving image, illustration and immersive installations. He has an MA in Design Interactions from the RCA. His most recent exhibits include: London College of Fashion: Plumial Space, Bio-art Seoul: Abundance of Life and Venice Architecture Biennale: School of Tomorrow.
