D-labにデザイン・アソシエイトとして滞在研究中のヘンリック・ニーラチュカー氏を講師に迎えるワークショップを開催いたします。ヘンリック氏がD-labで取り組んでいるプロジェクトに関連し、デザインやライフサイエンスを学ぶ学生や社会人を対象にした「実験のデザイン」をワークショップにて実施いたします。
概要
デザインプロセスにおいて、プロトタイピングを繰り返すことは最も大切なことです。
デザイナーは、異なるアイデアをテストするために、デザインの違いがもたらす意味を反映し、より的確な表現を求めてプロトタイプをつくります。ライフサイエンス領域において、実験を通じて知識を培いますが、一方で、生物学的な実験は事実をより明確にし、知識を深めるために、繰り返し行われます。
「実験のデザイン ワークショップ」では、デザイナーとライフサイエンスの科学者が参加し、さまざまな実験方法のプロトタイプを通じて新たな実験のあり方を模索します。

ワークショップの進行
デザインと科学を学ぶ学生が混在するチームを構成し、生物学やデザイン学を直接応用した実験方法を模索します。
ワークショップの狙いは、以下の通りです。
①デザインプロセスにおいて知識を生み出す新たな方法をデザイン学生が学ぶこと
②ライフサイエンスの学生がデザイン領域に親しむこと
ワークショップ初日、学生がそれぞれの領域における活動や研究を短いレクチャーやエクササイズを通じて紹介し、デザインと科学のつながりをともに学びます。2日目、ライフサイエンス領域の学生が学際的なチームを引率し、既存の実験をリデザインしていきます。3日目、デザイン学生がチームを牽引し、デザインの課題をより多く発見するために実験器具をデザインします。
本ワークショップで発見されたアイデアや洞察は、ヘンリック氏による滞在研究の発展のために使われる予定です。
ワークショップリーダー
ヘンリック・ニーラチュカー Henrik Nieratschker（MA, RCA）（MFA, Hfk Bremen）
デザインとアート、テクノロジーと科学といった領域横断するデザイン・プロジェクトを多数行っている。デザインの対象領域は、グラフィックやデジタルメディア、小説やプロダクトなどに多岐に渡る。現在、実験的なデザインスタジオ「Research and Waves」の共同設立者、フリーランスデザイナーとしても活動を行っている。
現在、D-labのデザイン・アソシエイツとして、本学の応用生物学系/昆虫先端研究推進センターの秋野順治教授とともに、アリの群行動に着想を得た集合知の開発と自動操縦車への応用に取り組んでいる。

本ワークショップは、一般のデザイナー・デザイン学生・ライフサイエンス研究者に開かれたワークショップです。
原則としてすべてのワークショップ日程に参加できることが条件です。

About the Workshop
Iterative prototyping lies at the heart of the design process. Designers create prototypes to test different ideas, understand their designs and use these insights to reject or refine them. In the life sciences, knowledge is gained through experimentation but in contrast, biological experiments repeat an existing situation in order to observe it more precisely and gain further in-depth knowledge.
The Designing Experiments workshop aims to look at the differences and similarities of these approaches and find new ways for scientists and designers to work together and benefit from the methods of knowledge generation in both disciplines.
Workshop Process
During the workshop, design and science students will work in teams using approaches from both fields to create experiments that will be directly applied to both biology and design contexts. It aims to:
• introduce design students to alternative ways of generating knowledge in the design process
• familiarise life sciences students with the principles of design.
On the first day, students will be introduced to each others’ disciplines through a series of short lectures and exercises that focus on the relationship between design and scientific experimentation. On the second day, science students will lead interdisciplinary teams to redesign existing experiments; on the third day, design students will lead teams in designing experiments that aim to gain insights on a design issue. The insights gained will be used to develop a prototype.
Workshop Leader
Henrik Nieratschker (MA, RCA in Design Interactions) (MFA, HfK Bremen)
Henrik Nieratschker works in the space between design and art, technology and science, focussing on the ways in which knowledge is generated and applied in and across these contexts. His output ranges from multimedia experiences that combine graphics, objects and (inter)active media to fiction and non-fiction writing. He is cofounder of the experimental design studio proto/meta and curatorial art collective Research and Waves and works as a freelance designer and educator.
He is currently KYOTO D-Lab’s Design Associate working with KIT’s Professor Toshiharu Akino on a research project entitled Social Insects / Social Realities that looks at the application of collective intelligence, inspired by ants’ navigational strategies as well as their social behaviour, in systems of connected cars.
