KYOTO Design Labは2014年12月、RCAデザインインタラクション専攻との共同で、ロボティックスをテーマとしたヘルスケア・フューチャーズ・ワークショップを、RCAのアンソニー・ダン教授とジェームス・オージャー博士、そしてジュリア・カセムD-lab特任教授による指導のもと実施しました。コークマン氏は、RCAからこのワークショップに参加した学生5名の内のひとりで、そこで彼が開発したアイデアは、自身の修了制作である、Open Surgery – a do-it-yourself surgery robot for domestic laparoscopy. の基盤となり、2016 Prix Ars Electronic、リンツ市（2016年アルス・エレクトロニカ賞）において優秀賞を受賞し、さらに2017年ロンドンのデザインミュージアムが選出する権威あるデザインアワードであるBeazley Design of the Yearにデジタル部門で選ばれました。

コークマン氏のプロジェクトOpen Surgeryは、速やかに実現されたデザインプロジェクトであり、微妙に著作権侵害な行為、かつ調査好きなジャーナリズムの異端の作品である。規制下での医療システムの枠外に住む地域社会に、手ごろな価格でアクセス可能な外科用ロボットを開発しようと努めつつ、彼は強大な知的著作権の壁に立ち向かっていた。そのような中で、彼はいかに企業が人命を救えるかもしれない技術を秘蔵して、一般の人々に届けることを阻害しているかを明らかにした。
驚くべきことに、コークマン氏はデザインの提案をまとめあげてしまうことを可能にした－オープンソースソフトウェアで動く低侵襲手術ロボットは、合法に入手可能な手術支援ロボット、ダ・ヴィンチ（da Vinci Surgical System）の価格のほんの僅かに過ぎない－フランク氏にとっての、法に反するかもしれない明確なリスクにもかかわらずである。このプロジェクトはまさしくタイムリーであり、社会的責務があり、企業による知識の独占は社会の損失の原因であるという批判となっている。

In December 2014, Kyoto D-lab held a Healthcare Futures Workshop centering on robotics in collaboration with the RCA’s Design Interactions Course at the Royal College of Art. It was led by Professor Anthony Dunne and James Auger and D-lab’s Professor Julia Cassim.
Frank Kolkman was one of the five RCA students who took part. The idea he developed then became the basis for his graduation work – OpenSurgery – a do-it-yourself surgery robot for domestic laparoscopy. It was a prizewinner at Ars Electronica 2016 in Linz and in February 2017 won the prestigious Beazley Design of the Year Award in the Digital category at the Design Museum, London.

“Frank Kolkman’s project OpenSurgery is at once a design project, a subtle act of piracy, and an unorthodox piece of investigative journalism. While trying to develop a surgical robot that could be made affordable and accessible to communities living outside regulated healthcare systems, he ran head-on into an enormous intellectual copyright wall. In doing so, he exposed how corporations are hgoarding potentially life-saving technologies and preventing them from reaching the public.
Amazingly, Kolkman was able to maintain the integrity of the design proposal – a low-invasive surgical robot, running on open-source software, that costs a fraction of the price of the legally available Da Vinci Surgical System – despite the clear risks of legal action against him. The project is absolutely timely, socially responsible and critical of the monopolisation of knowledge by corporations to the detriment of society.” – Noam Toran
