KYOTO Design Lab will hold the “Exchanged Forms” in Milan, a joint exhibition with the Design Incubation Centre, National University of Singapore.

The exhibition features products resulted from the joint project between KYOTO Design Lab, Kyoto Institute of Technology and Design Incubation Centre, National University of Singapore.

This project is regarded as an experiment where we intentionally induce a spread and a transition of culture, one of the most important process in history, under regulated conditions. In the process of certain cultural elements such as words, tangible objects, and icons spreading from a certain region to another, some information inevitably gets lost and causes misinterpretation. At the same time, the adopted cultural elements evolve into something new by getting combined with the local culture of the destination. We purposely induced this process among Singaporean students and Japanese students.

The project was divided into 4 phases. During the first phase, students of each country looked into elements of various scales, such as detailing of products and overall structure of the city, and collected elements that uniquely reflect their local culture. In the second phase, students organized the collected elements as samples and sent them to the students of the other country. After receiving the samples from the students of the other country, each student chose a sample that caught their attention, observed it well, and interpreted in their own way. In the third phase, each student used the sample to generate the design of a functional, everyday object that fits in the context of their own country.

This exhibition, indeed, is the last phase of this project. The objects designed by Singaporean students and Kyoto students will be jumbled up and exhibited in the same room. It would be interesting to see if the audiences in Milan will detect hints of Kyoto culture or those of Singaporean culture.
