About the Summer School

The Kyoto Design Lab Textiles Summer School is a collaboration between KYOTO Design Lab at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, the Royal College of Art (RCA) and the Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE). It aims to facilitate a creative encounter between Japan’s traditional and experimental textile producers in the Tango Peninsula and designers, textile engineers and materials scientists from Japan and overseas. The summer school will take place in the Tango Peninsula and in Kyoto itself.

Programme Outline

The summer school offers an unrivalled opportunity for in-depth research into Japan’s weaving industry both traditional and experimental and a facilitated structure for design collaborations with textile producers.

After a one-day orientation session at KYOTO Design Lab on July 24, participants will leave on a study tour to different weaving firms in the Tango Peninsula and take part in a one-day workshop at the Kyoto Prefectural Textile Research Centre with local producers. Returning to Kyoto a 4-day design workshop facilitated by the RCA and DAE will be held at KYOTO Design Lab in collaboration with the Advanced Fibro Science Department and the Department of Bio-Based Materials. Visits will also be arranged to textile centres of interest in Kyoto. Weekends will be free. The workshops will be run by Anne Toomey, Programme Leader Textiles, Royal College of Art, Michelle Baggerman, Design Academy Eindhoven and Professor Julia Cassim, KYOTO Design Lab.

The project will culminate in a bi-lingual joint publication by the KYOTO Design Lab with contributions from the collaborating partners.

Application

The opportunity is open to designers, design students, textile engineers and materials scientists. A limited number of places are available. If you are interested in joining, please send a short biography and description of your interest in the project and what you can contribute to it. Designers should also send a short portfolio of their work. The application deadline is June 30, 2017

Please send the above by post or e-mail to the following. For any queries relating to the summer school please contact julia-cassim[at]kit.ac.jp (English) or info[at]d-lab.kit.ac.jp
