京都工芸繊維大学 KYOTO Design Lab［D-lab］は、下記の日程で、2018年度 KYOTO Design Lab デザイナー・イン・レジデンス・プログラムとしてマールース・テン・ボーマー氏、ノーム・トーラン氏と取り組んだ共同研究の作品展「歩きはじめる女性＋目覚める収蔵品」を開催いたします。

京都工芸繊維大学 KYOTO Design Lab デザイナー・イン・レジデンスは、国際的な才能を一定期間D-labに招聘するプログラムです。招聘されたデザイナーは、京都の文脈に応答する作品を制作し、京都工芸繊維大学における専門研究をおこないます。

出展作家のマールース・テン・ボーマーは、オランダ出身のコンセプチュアル・シューズデザイナーで、日本の伝統的なフットウェアと歩き方の関係性や動作、女性の歩き方をリサーチし、アニメーションのキャラクターの歩き方に着目した映像作品を制作すると同時に、吹き付け和紙を用いたシューズをデザインしました。

また、映像作家のノーム・トーランは、京都工芸繊維大学美術工芸資料館に所蔵されているコレクションの背景に隠された歴史的・文化的・個人的な物語をひも解き、それらの新たな批評的解釈を可能にする映像作品を制作しました。

本展では、これらの作品を、制作過程のリサーチ資料とともに展示いたします。ぜひご来場ください。

歩きはじめる女性
マールース・テン・ボーマー

マールース・テン・ボーマーは、日本の伝統的な履物と、日本の潜在的な文化から派生する動きの分類を比較し、日本の「動く女性」の社会的、文化的形成におけるデザインとメディアの役割を検討した。

彼女は、古い邦画と、ユーザーが初音ミクの3Dモデルに動きを与えることのアニメーション・プログラムのフリーウェアに焦点を当てた。モーション解析技術を導入し、2つの映像作品によって女性の歩き方の本質について調査した。

同時に、日本の伝統的な履物を機能的なデザインという観点から調査し、フットウェアのデザインと生産に対する新しいアプローチを提案した。吹き付け和紙、CMCジェル、水を用いたフットウェアのテストをおこない、靴の生産においてどのような工業的、素材的、美的な機会を持ちえるかを検討した。

マールース・テン・ボーマー
Marloes ten Bhömer
オランダ・ダイフェン出身。ロンドン・キングストン大学の上席研究員。
彼女の実践に基づいた研究は、新しい美的価値や構造的可能性のために、伝統的でないテクノロジーや素材的な技術による実験を通して、女性の靴における一般的なタイポロジーに対して絶えず挑戦しようとしている。
彼女の受賞作品はさまざまなメディアとして展開され、ニューヨークのファッション工科大学の常設コレクションの一部として展示されている。主な受賞に、ロンドンのthe Design Museum の Designs of the Year（2009）、the Jerwood Contemporary Makers Prize（2010）など。

──付喪神を通して見るアーカイブ

原資料の解釈を意図的に間違えることで、どのような機会が生まれるだろうか。アーカイブから、文化的、歴史的、地理的、政治的な「堅苦しい」枠組みを剥ぎ取り、アーカイブとの遭遇をフィクションで覆うと何が起こるだろうか。資料の「直截な解釈」からは得られない何かを理解できるだろうか。そして、これらのことは、アーカイブ、そして、アーカイブが表現しようとする社会について、どのようなことを明らかにするだろうか。

ノーム・トーランは、京都工芸繊維大学美術工芸資料館の収蔵品に取り組むべく招聘された。アーカイブが明らかにすることのできる歴史的、文化的、個人的な物語を再検討する手段として、日本に伝わる付喪神の物語を利用した。付喪神（九十九神）とは、道具などの「モノ」に精霊（妖怪）が宿ったものであり、99年間、持ち主のために誠実に役目を果たすことで、魂を与えられ、自己を認識し、動き出すといわれている。

妖怪にのっとられた収蔵品たちは、資料館に閉じ込められ、文脈を無視された環境に気づいてしまったという設定で、アーカイブに対する新しい解釈を開拓するような2つの映像作品を製作した。

ノーム・トーラン
Noam Toran
アメリカ・ニューメキシコ州のラスクルーセス生まれ。オランダ・ロッテルダム在住。映画や文学、演劇的な形式において具現化されたものとしての歴史、記憶、ストーリーテリングの相互関係を反映する複雑な物語を生み出している。彼の作品は、ポンピドゥー・センター（パリ）やクンストハレ・ウィーン（オーストリア）、ヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館（ロンドン）、イスラエル博物館（エルサレム）、ヴィット・デ・ウィット（ロッテルダム）、 MuHKA（アントワープ）、ニューヨーク近代美術館など、世界中のコレクションで展示されている。

KYOTO Design Lab [D-lab] will hold the Exhibition “Walking Women + The Reanimated Archive” at KYOTO Design Lab Tokyo Gallery.

The Designer in Residence is a competitive program in which an emerging international talent in design is invited to spend a period of time at the D-lab. There they work jointly with KIT students and staff to develop new signature pieces in response to the context of Kyoto and to the research expertise of KIT.

The exhibition centres on a joint two-month residency by the Dutch conceptual shoe designer Marloes ten Bhömer and Noam Toran at D-lab. The project was initiated and led by Professor Julia Cassim.

Walking Women
Marloes ten Bhömer

Marloes ten Bhömer collated a taxonomy of movement of traditional Japanese footwear to consider the role played by design and media in the social and cultural formation of the Japanese ‘woman in motion.’

Her focus was classic Japanese cinema and a freeware animation programme for Hatsune Miku that allows users to animate 3D models of this Vocaloid character. Employing motion analysis technology, she examined the nature of female gait in two videos.

In parallel, she investigated traditional Japanese footwear from a functional design perspective. Footwear tests were carried out with spray-on paper composed of mulberry fibre, CMC gels and water. Ten Bhömer generated a series of tests to see how such a material would behave in shoe production and what technical, material and aesthetic opportunities it might afford.

Marloes ten Bhömer
Born in Duiven, the Netherlands, Marloes ten Bhömer is a Senior Research Fellow in Design at Kingston University London.
Ten Bhömer’s practice-based research challenges generic typologies of women’s shoes through experiments with non-traditional technologies and material techniques to propose new aesthetic and structural possibilities.
Her award-winning work is produced in a variety of media, is exhibited internationally and part of the permanent collection of the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. It was selected for Designs of the Year, Design Museum London (2009), the Jerwood Contemporary Makers Prize (2010).

The Reanimated Archive:
the KIT Museum & Archives viewed through the folk tradition of Tsukomogami narratives

What opportunities arise if we purposely misinterpret or misread source material? What happens if we strip the archive of its hard cultural, historic, geographic and political frameworks and veil our encounter in a fiction? What might we understand that a straightforward reading would miss? What would this reveal about how archives depict the society they serve?

Noam Toran was invited to address the permanent collection of KIT’s Museum and Archives. He used the Japanese folk tradition of the Tsukomogami to reconsider the historical, cultural and personal stories it can reveal. Tsukomogami are a type of yōkai – inanimate objects that, having faithfully served their owner for 99 years, receive a soul, become alive and self-aware. Most are benign but, if mistreated or neglected by their owners, can become spiteful and seek revenge on human beings.

Imagining that the archive is overrun with yōkai that have found themselves ‘imprisoned’ and out of context, Toran has produced two video works to open up the archive to new readings and interpretations.

Noam Toran
Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Lives and works in Rotterdam. He creates intricate narratives that reflect on the interrelations of history, memory and storytelling as embodied in cinematic, literary, and performative forms. He exhibits and publishes internationally, notably at the CNAC Pompidou (Paris), Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna), Victoria & Albert Museum (London), Israel Museum (Jerusalem), Museum of Modern Art (NYC), and other leading venues.
